Nature Smart
Our first year we recommended a book (Nature Crafts for Kids)  that subsequently went out of print.  However, we have great news!  The book as been reprinted in its entirety  along with two other similar books (Kid Style Nature Crafts and Ecology Crafts for kids) -all in this volume!   Don't waste your money on any other craft books!  You will not be able to find such beautiful, relevant, interesting, and educational crafts in any other book (except for it's companion book, Science Smart)! I know because I've looked at them all!  This is the best craft book around, and actually provides a well rounded science study too!  Unlike many craft books that produce what I consider junk and clutter, this one has children making useful and beautiful crafts and projects.

*During 1st grade, we focus on the nature portion of this book.

-Some topics that will be covered in this section are water cycle, birds' wings, bird sounds, moths, shells, bugs, hummingbirds, bats, plants, wild veggies, flowers' shapes and colors, fish, wasps, trees, leaves, vines, frost, gourds, roots, veggies, chili peppers, seeds, ice, snow, animal vision, the night sky, herbs, and more!  (There are not only projects and crafts to go along with these studies, but interested pages covering the topics in depth!)
-A few of the projects and crafts in this section  include grass mat, butterfly hatchery, willow whistles, stepping stones, herbal vinegars, garden trellis, potpourri, twig wreath, dyes, notecards, basket out of twigs, drum, apple crisp (yum!), twig shelf, and many more!

I Wonder Why I Blink and Other Questions about my body
This fabulously illustrated book covers everything your child needs to know about the human body in an entertaining way.  This is no textbook, but it covers everything a textbook would, such as parts of the body (brain, nerves, bones, skin, muscles, etc) in addition to offering fun insights such as "What are goose bumps," "What is my funny bone," and "Why do I get hiccups."
