The
first grade booklists
|
First grade sets the pace for the rest of a child's education. It is our
goal to help lay a strong foundation in the basic skills of reading, writing,
and math so that your child can move forward with confidence and success in
the years to come.
Taking advantage of a first grader's love for a good story,
we offer a literature based history program utilizing age appropriate and
engaging books through which the child will be able to "live" in the past. We also provide an
exciting science
program which emphasizes nature study in addition to covering other scientific
concepts using fun, informative books.
An
extraordinary teacher's plan book called the Corebook helps you to organize your
daily schedule and record what you have done. The Corebook provides guidelines for
narrations,
geography study, memory lists, health and safety, and copywork, and
helps ensure you meet the objectives for the year.
By
the way, we know every child is different-- feel free to mix and match between
the grade levels to create the best "fit" for your child!

Building a
thorough understanding of the mathematical concepts of
numbers, counting, and addition is vitally important
before moving on to other concepts. We start off with
Tanglewood's Mouse Math which teaches basic
concepts using both a workbook and tactile approach.
When this short but foundational book is finished, your
first grader will move on to the MCP 1st grade math
workbook. (A teacher's edition is available, but we don't
suggest it for this early age.) *We don't carry the MCP
math products yet, but click below for info on how to
purchase them.

Charlotte Mason stressed the importance of spending many hours out
of doors playing and studying nature. While our first graders do read two
engaging books covering plants and the human body, we emphasize the outdoors and
an interactive approach to science during these early years. We offer a fine
nature crafts book that has well designed, beautiful, and fun-to-make crafts to
compliment each season. We also provide a Nature Notebook designed for
little fingers to record exciting finds.

These two
books and one CD are unavailable to us at this time,
although you may be able to find copies at your local
book/music store.
We
have selected fine art and music materials that complement
the rest of your first grader's curriculum. For
example, the art book contains exciting pictures of Greek
"gods". Although Bach was certainly not around in
ancient times, his music is very accessible to young
children. Your child will find the storybook about
Bach absolutely fascinating, instilling a love for this
composer's music.

(The Tanglewood
School Curriculum does not begin formal language
study until 2nd grade-Latin. However, if you want to
start this year, check out our
Latin page to see what might work for you. There are several
modern language programs available for young children, however, and you
may want to shop around and find one that you think would
be beneficial to your child's education. Let us know what
