Spine Book
An Island Story by
H. E. Marshall
H.E. Marshall applies her
masterful storytelling ability to the fascinating history of England.
This book, used in Charlotte Mason's own schools, is the best children's
history of England that I have ever seen. (2nd
graders cover the first 2/3 of the book. The rest is covered
in the 3rd grade.)

St.
George and the Dragon
A winner of the Caldecott
Medal for its fabulous illustrations, this is an excellent retelling of
Spenser's "The Faerie Queen" in which the Red Cross Knight George slays the
dragon which has been besieging the countryside for years. This
allegorical story will intrigue you as much as it will enthrall your child.
A must!! (303AD)

Sword
in the Tree
by Clyde Roberts Bulla
Written by one of my favorite authors,
this is the story of young Shan and his attempts to regain what was stolen
from his family. Shan's quest brings him all the way to Camelot and
into the court of the great King Arthur.

Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest
The story of the
legendary outlaw during the time of King Richard the Lionhearted, related in
the way that only Ann McGovern can do. In my opinion, this is
the best Robin Hood story for children.

Time Traveler's Book of Knights and Castles
Another wonderfully
illustrated book in the Time Traveler's series. These books,
chock-full of pictures, are requisite for helping children to put pictures
to the words they have heard from their textbooks.

The Canterbury Tales
Beautiful illustrations along with the Canterbury Tales retold for
children are in this lovely hardcover full-sized book.
(We recommend that you preview the
tales -as with any edition of Canterbury Tales- before reading them to your
children, in order to avoid topics you may think your children are not ready
for. Having said this, we think this is the best one out there.) |

Favorite Medieval Tales
I must admit that the cover of this book put me off at first.
However, Once I started reading the stories inside I was hooked. This
is a fabulous collection of the most famous medieval tales including Finn
MacCoul, Beowulf, The Sword in the Stone, Island of the Lost Children, The
Song of Roland, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Robin Hood,
Chanticleer and the Fox, and a few others. The stories are
well-written, perfect for children. (By the way, the picture on the
front does not go with any story inside.) Fabulous color
illustrations.

The Kid's Book of Chess
& Chess Set
The fun way to learn this game of logic and planning! The book
introduces each chess piece as its medieval counterpart on a battlefield.
In addition to giving accurate historical information about (real) pawns/pikemen
and knights, Kings, Queens, and bishops, and castles, and beautiful
illustrations of each, the book also takes the student step-by-step through
all of the game pieces' moves, chess terminology and battlefield (board)
set-up. Very thorough, very educational, very fun! |

important symbols.
