Grade History Anchor Book:
An Island Story
by H. E. Marshall
H.E. Marshall applies her
masterful storytelling ability to the fascinating history of England.
This book, used in Charlotte Mason's own schools, is the best children's
history of England that I have ever seen. (2nd
graders cover the first half of the book. The second half is covered
in the 3rd grade.)

Another wonderfully
illustrated book in the Time Traveler's series. These books,

Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest
The story of the
legendary outlaw during the time of King Richard the Lionhearted, related in

Sword in the Tree
by Clyde Roberts Bulla
Written by one of my favorite authors,
this is the story of young Shan and his attempts to regain what was stolen
from his family. Shan's quest brings him all the way to Camelot and
into the court of the great King Arthur.

St. George and the Dragon
A winner of the Caldecott
Medal for its fabulous illustrations, this is an excellent retelling of
Spenser's "The Faerie Queen" in which the Red Cross Knight George slays the
dragon which has been besieging the countryside for years. This
allegorical story will intrigue you as much as it will enthrall your child.

Favorite Medieval Tales
I must admit that the cover of this book put me off at first.
However, Once I started reading the stories inside I was hooked. This
is a fabulous collection of the most famous medieval tales including Finn
MacCoul, Beowulf, The Sword in the Stone, Island of the Lost Children, The
Song of Roland, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Robin Hood,
Chanticleer and the Fox, and a few others. The stories are
well-written, perfect for children. (By the way, the picture on the
front does not go with any story inside.) Fabulous color
illustrations.

Hill of Fire
An "I Can Read" book, this is the fascinating and true story of a
volcano that grew right out of the middle of a farmer's cornfield.
Your young reader will enjoy reading this book on his own. (Chronologically,
this book is not in the Medieval period. However, it is a good
geography lesson.)

Canterbury Tales
Chaucer's famous story of
the travelers' contest is rewritten for children. This version
tells the tales in easy-to-understand language while eliminating the
material more suited to adult readers. Very enjoyable. I'd use
this version again for an older student.

(Most libraries carry this
book. If you're on a tight budget, I would suggest borrowing this book
from the library. While I believe that the prose is enjoyable and that
knowledge of the contents is necessary for a good education, this is
probably not a book your child will return to on his own.) |
