3rd Grade History Anchor  Book:

An Island Story by H. E. Marshall
H.E. Marshall applies her masterful storytelling ability to the fascinating history of England.  This book, used in Charlotte Mason's own schools, is the best children's history of England  that I have ever seen.  (2nd graders cover the first half of the book.  The second half is covered in 3rd grade.)

The Scottish Chiefs by Jane Porter
First published in 1809, this is the classic story of 14th century Scotland's greatest heroes: Sir William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.  (Because of the semi-difficult language in this book, I plan on reading it to my girls at the end of third grade, rather than at the beginning where it belongs chronologically.  I think the extra 8 months or so of vocabulary development will be hugely beneficial in their appreciation of this wonderful book.  Sounds even better if Dad reads it!)  I love the illustrations!

The Shakespeare Stealer
Don't miss out on this fantastic book!  The story of orphaned Widge, who is forced by his master to attempt to steal the great Shakespeare's newest work, Hamlet.  Great plot and excellent portrayal of the time period.

Shakespeare Stories Vol. 1 by Leon Garfield
I much prefer these Shakespeare stories to the popular Tales from Shakespeare written by Charles and Mary Lamb.  Garfield uses Shakespeare's own rich language in his prose, and all the words "spoken" are taken directly from Shakespeare.  Even so, your third grader will be able to easily understand the stories.  This volume contains: Twelfth Night, King Lear, The Tempest, The Merchant of Venice, King Richard the 2nd, King Henry IV pt 1, Hamlet, Romeo & Juliet, Othello, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Macbeth.
Enjoy!

Joan of Arc
Diane Stanley's beautifully written and illustrated book about the life of the "Maid of Orleans".

(Most libraries carry this book.  While I think it is important to have most books sitting on my shelves for easy access to little hands over the years, if you need to cut costs, I would cut here.)

The Renaissance
Using paintings, sculptures, and other forms of art common to the period, the life and culture of the Renaissance is illustrated.

Ocean of Truth: The Story of Isaac Newton
This account of the life of Isaac Newton will bring alive to your child this great scientist who developed calculus, worked out the mathematical details of the Law of Gravity, and studied the properties of color.  Christian themes.

Pocahontas and the Strangers by Clyde  Roberts Bulla
This is my favorite rendition of the Pocahontas/John Smith story.  (Those of you who have read Bulla's other books know why!)

America's Paul Revere
I wanted to offer a less expensive book on Revere, but this one was so good that I had to go with it.  Written by Esther Forbes, author of Johnny Tremain.

$9.95

Louis Braille
Another wonderfully written biography by Margaret Davidson.  I tested this book on a girl who did not like to read.  I was pleased when, instead of complaining, she actually asked to read the next chapter each day.  (An added benefit is that any child who listens to/reads this book will gain an appreciation for safety around sharp objects.)

Buttons for General Washington
An exciting story about a boy who secretly carries messages to George Washington during the Revolutionary War.  Your child will be able to read this one on her own.

The Reb and the Redcoats
This book set during the Revolutionary War is unusual in that it is told from the viewpoint of a British family who is entrusted with the care of an American prisoner of war.  Heartwarming!
Christian themes.

The Story of Benjamin Franklin
Another wonderful biography written by Margaret Davidson.  This book tells the inspiring story of Ben Franklin, statesman, printer, author, inventor, founder of first public library, and much more!

The United States of America
I wish you could see the wonderful illustrations in this book!  While trying to find a replacement for the State Sticker Book (which was to be the spine of the 3rd grade state study) I had several "state" books covering tables, floors, etc.  This is the one my girls could not leave alone.  Each state is beautifully drawn; mountains, rivers and major cities are all visible.  Each state also has charming pictures of its state bird, flower, tree etc. along with pertinent interesting facts.

The State Sticker Book
We now have The State Sticker Book which was originally a part of the 3rd grade curriculum! After waiting nearly a year for this wonderful book, the publishing company finally reprinted it!  This book is outstanding for teaching elementary students about the different states in our great country.  Each state is covered on one page with info such as state motto, bird, capital, interesting facts and trivia.  Along with fun "cartoony" pictures, there are stickers of state flowers, flags, and capitals.  In the back of the book there is a "Capital Matching" game, information about the United States,  national symbols, holidays, and the words to our national anthem.  A fun learning tool at an unbeatable price.
