Grammar enrichment:

Language Practice series
Although I'm not much of a workbook person, I really like these and would suggest using them during the second half of the school year.  Each book is designed for a specific grade level and covers most (if not all) of the important concepts your child should know in simple one-page lessons.  Each concept is briefly, but clearly explained, followed by meaningful practice exercises.  Great preparation for those standardized tests, in addition to being short & sweet!!

(I've found that the grade levels are appropriately assigned for these workbooks and would suggest sticking to your child's grade level regardless of whether you're doing a 'slower' Charlotte Mason track or a 'faster' classical track.)

Language/Grammar Texts

Grades 1 & 2:
First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind
We've all been waiting for this book to be released and it is finally available!  Written by Jessie Wise, the co-author of The Well-Trained Mind, this fabulous text is a complete beginning grammar and writing course.  All the lessons are scripted (tells the parent exactly what to say).  Even though this text is advertised as a classical approach to teaching grammar, Charlotte Mason"ites" like me will appreciate the emphasis on poem memorization, picture study, and copywork lessons as well.  Absolutely wonderful!

Intended for use in 1st and 2nd grades.  (I'm on a slower track with my girls and plan to use it in 2nd and 3rd grades.)

$24.00      420 pp.
(hardcover edition- I picked this since it needs to
last 2 years for each child who uses it)

$18.95- softcover also available

Grades 3 & 4:
Primary Language Lessons
This is more than just a simple grammar text!  While the child gets a comprehensive education in English grammar and usage, he also gets a good dose of fine literature written by the likes of Robert Louis Stevenson and Samuel Taylor Coleridge as well as fables, folklore and maxims.

Charlotte Mason"ites" will like Miss Serl's use of reproduced paintings to train children in the art of observation and oral language skills.

Intended for use in 3rd and 4th grades, ages 7-9

Writing Programs

Suggested for 3rd grade:
Writing Strands 3
Unfortunately, the study of writing seems to be often neglected in the homeschooling world.  This important skill needs to be taught as early as  possible. It is important for third-graders to start learning organizational techniques for writing.  The mental skills involved are hopefully already being developed through narration and copywork.  The next step, however, is to put one's own organized thoughts down on paper. Writing Strands 3 starts off with simple writing projects designed to teach children important descriptive techniques and then moves on to organization.

Suggested for 4th grade:
Wordsmith Apprentice
I've haven't used this program yet, but I've heard a lot of rave reviews about it.  It seems as if this as a writing course that children actually like! Here's what the publisher has to say about it:
All the practicality, humor and fun of Wordsmith, but written for the younger student, ages 9-12. An easy to use writing course encouraging students to develop their writing skills as they participate in every role on a newspaper staff: editor, reporter, writer, etc. Children develop a love for writing as they express themselves through sentence and paragraph writing, persuasive writing, and much more.

Spelling Programs

Recommended for 1st grade:
Spectrum Spelling Grade 1
Thirty-six colorful lessons.  Each lesson contains four fun but simple pages and the words and activities are based on phonetic principles.  This particular book is good even for children who are just learning to read.  The first 15 lessons review the most basic phonetic principles, but don't actually have word lists to memorize.  Beginning with the 16th lesson, there are word lists containing 6 words (and 4 challenge words for those who wish to use them) and simple, but useful activities involving those words, phonics, and study skills (such as ABC order).  One thing I like about this particular spelling book is that it doesn't have very many proofreading exercises (usually found sprinkled liberally throughout in most programs) which according to CM can do more harm than good (brain sees the word misspelled and this "photograph" imprinted on the brain can cause confusion).

*If your child is already a proficient reader and has a fairly good foundation in phonics, I would suggest getting the Grade 2 spelling book.
