Spine  Book: Choice # 1

An Island Story by H. E. Marshall
H.E. Marshall applies her masterful storytelling ability to the fascinating history of England.  This book, used in Charlotte Mason's own schools, is the best children's history of England  that I have ever seen. (
2nd graders cover the first half of the book.  The second half is covered in the 3rd grade.)

$19.99    paperback    506 pp

Spine  Book: Choice # 2

Story of the World vol. 2 by Susan Wise Bauer, co-author of The Well-Trained Mind.
Volume 2:  The Middle Ages is the second of a four volume series and covers the major historical events in the years 400 to 1600 CE, as well as including maps, illustrations, and tales from each culture.

Susan Wise Bauer has provided a captivating guide to the history of other lands.  Written in an engaging, straightforward manner, A Story of the World: History for the Classical Child; Volume 2: The Middle Ages weaves world history into a story book format.

-Tanglewood no longer carries this item.
After using SOTW for a year, I've decided that
I prefer historical studies to concentrate on particular
civilizations rather than to give a "sweeping view" of   history.  The Tanglewood curriculum
has been changed accordingly.-

How to choose between the (2) spine books:

There are many approaches to teaching history and our spine-book choices
represent two of them:

An Island Story presents a chronological history of the world as seen from Britain's viewpoint.  Other countries are covered only insomuch as they are involved with Britain.  The strength of this approach is that English history gives a student a very strong 'grid' on which to hang future knowledge of Western history.  The weakness is that Eastern/African history is virtually untouched.

The Story of the  World presents a chronological view of history sweeping across countries and cultures.  The strength of this approach is that the student gains a cursory knowledge of a variety of people groups.  The weakness is that the student does not gain an intimate knowledge of any group and therefore does not have a grid on which to hang future knowledge.

St. George and the Dragon
A winner of the Caldecott Medal for its fabulous illustrations, this is an excellent retelling of Spenser's "The Faerie Queen" in which the Red Cross Knight George slays the dragon which has been besieging the countryside for years.  This allegorical story will intrigue you as much as it will enthrall your child. A must!!    (303AD)

$6.99    pb    32pp

The Story of King Arthur
Specially adapted for young readers, Malory's stirring tales of King Arthur are sure to delight your youngster.  Illustrated.

 $1.50    pb    92pp

Sword in the Tree by Clyde Roberts Bulla
Written by one of my favorite authors, this is the story of young Shan and his attempts to regain what was stolen from his family.  Shan's quest brings him all the way to Camelot and into the court of the great King Arthur.

$4.25

Viking Raiders
Another volume in the excellent Time Traveler series.  Outstanding Illustrations.  (Set around time of King Alfred)

$6.95    pb

Robin Hood of Sherwood Forest
The story of the legendary outlaw during the time of King Richard the Lionhearted, related in the way that only Ann McGovern can do.  In my opinion,  this is the best Robin Hood story for children.

$3.99    pb    128pp

Minstrel in the Tower
Set in the year 1195, this is the exciting story  of two children who must travel the French countryside in search of their mother's estranged brother.  If they don't find him in time, something terrible may happen!

(Publisher is out of stock- may not be available for quite a while.

$3.99    pb    60pp

Time Traveler's Book of Knights and Castles
Another wonderfully illustrated book in the Time Traveler's series.  These books, chock-full of pictures, are requisite for helping children to put pictures to the words they have heard from their textbooks.

$6.95    pb

Fine Print: A Story about Johann Gutenberg
This interesting book about Gutenberg's struggles to complete and perfect his printing process gives a vivid picture of life in the Middle Ages.

$5.95    pb    64pp

Favorite Medieval Tales
I must admit that the cover of this book put me off  at first.  However, Once I started reading the stories inside I was hooked.  This is a fabulous collection of the most famous medieval tales including Finn MacCoul, Beowulf, The Sword in the Stone, Island of the Lost Children, The Song of Roland, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Robin Hood,  Chanticleer and the Fox, and a few others.  The stories are well-written, perfect for children.  (By the way, the picture on the front does not go with any story inside.)  Fabulous color illustrations.

$7.99    pb

The Story of Money
Beautifully illustrated, Maestros' book reads like a story while telling how people came to use money for trading.  Your child will gain a firm grasp of the underlying principles of trade and learn a lot about history as well!

$7.99    pb

The Discovery of the Americas
Breathtaking pictures illustrate the voyages of several explorers and their subsequent discoveries of new lands.

$6.95  pb

Spine Book:
The Story of the Middle Ages
by H.A. Guerber

Canterbury Tales
Chaucer's famous story of the travelers'  contest is rewritten for children.  This version tells the tales in easy-to-understand language while eliminating the material more suited to adult readers.  Read a few of the stories to your young child and use it again later too!
