Spine Book: Choice # 1
An Island Story by
H. E. Marshall
H.E. Marshall applies her
masterful storytelling ability to the fascinating history of England.
This book, used in Charlotte Mason's own schools, is the best children's
history of England that I have ever seen. (2nd
graders cover the first half of the book. The second half is covered
in the 3rd grade.)

Spine Book:
Choice # 2Story
of the World vol. 2 by Susan Wise Bauer,
co-author of The Well-Trained Mind.
Volume 2: The Middle Ages
is the second of a four volume series and covers the major historical events
in the years 400 to 1600 CE, as well as including maps, illustrations, and
tales from each culture.
Susan Wise Bauer has provided a
captivating guide to the history of other lands. Written in an engaging,
straightforward manner, A Story of the World: History for the Classical
Child; Volume 2: The Middle Ages weaves world history into a story book
format.
-Tanglewood
no longer carries this item.
After using SOTW for a year, I've decided that
I prefer historical studies to concentrate on particular
civilizations rather than to give a "sweeping view" of history.
The Tanglewood curriculum
has been changed accordingly.-

How to
choose between the (2) spine books:
There are many
approaches to teaching history and our spine-book choices
represent two of them:
An
Island Story
presents a
chronological history of the world as seen from Britain's
viewpoint. Other countries are covered only insomuch as
they are involved with Britain. The strength of this
approach is that English history gives a student a very strong
'grid' on which to hang future knowledge of Western history.
The weakness is that Eastern/African history is virtually
untouched.
The
Story of the World
presents a
chronological view of history sweeping across countries and
cultures. The strength of this approach is that the
student gains a cursory knowledge of a variety of people groups.
The weakness is that the student does not gain an intimate
knowledge of any group and therefore does not have a grid on
which to hang future knowledge.

St.
George and the Dragon
A winner of the Caldecott
Medal for its fabulous illustrations, this is an excellent retelling of
Spenser's "The Faerie Queen" in which the Red Cross Knight George slays the
dragon which has been besieging the countryside for years. This
allegorical story will intrigue you as much as it will enthrall your child.
A must!! (303AD)

Song of Roland, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Robin Hood,
Chanticleer and the Fox, and a few others. The stories are
well-written, perfect for children. (By the way, the picture on the
