Favorite Poems Old and New

This anthology is the poetry "must-have."  A magnificent volume, it contains over 700 poems written by classic and contemporary (before 1957, anyway) poets.

I've looked at countless poetry books for children, and believe that no other volume comes close to this one with regard to quality and quantity.

  *Sweet black & white illustrations
*Arranged according to a wide range of topics
  *Appropriate for all ages

The follow books are from the series
Poetry for Young People

~
I think the books in this series are the absolute best for getting to "know" particular poets.~

~ Each book begins with an engaging biography which gives the child a "feel" for where ~
the poet is coming from and why his/her poems are the way they are.

~ Approximately twenty-five poems, usually the  most representative ~
of the poet's works and most accessible to young people, are included in each volume.

~ The artwork in each book was specially commissioned to match the tone of the poet ~
and the content of his/her poems.

~ Beautiful books, well worth the price! ~
Arranged (somewhat) in order of difficulty

1.  Robert Louis Stevenson
Thirty-two of Stevenson's beloved poems are included in this compilation.  The illustrations, by Lucy Corvino, capture the sweetness of childhood imagination perfectly!

2.  Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Twenty-seven of Longfellow's most famous poems, including The Village Blacksmith, Paul Revere's Ride, The Wreck of the Hesperus, and Hiawatha.

3.  Lewis Carroll
Fun poems written by the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

4.  Emily Dickinson
"Delight in the hidden secrets of the everyday world.  Insects, birds, animals, the grass, the sun and  moon, trees, flowers, the sea..." (from back book cover)
This is one of my favorites in this series!  Cheerful illustrations.

5.  Edna St. Vincent Millay
Millay is known for putting into words the wonder and mystery found in everyday life. She's been one of my favorite authors since I "discovered" her in college.

6.  Edward Lear
Enjoy Lear's rollicking and rambunctious poems. I love this one:  "There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, "it is just as I feared!--
Two Owls and a Hen, four Larks and
   a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!"

7.  Rudyard Kipling
Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book, enjoyed experimenting with the structure, rhythm, and rhyme of his poems, creating a very unique body of work.  This compilation includes his famous poem, "If."

8.  Robert Frost
From the back cover: Smell the sweetness of flowers in Rose Pagonias; wonder what's been missed on The Road Not Taken; feel the peacefulness of After Apple-Picking; listen to the whippoorwill fluttering about the Ghost House.

9.  Robert Browning
Considered the greatest poet of the Victorian age, Browning is known for the "dramatic monologue" in which he gets inside the thoughts and feelings of his speakers.  As he reveals the truth of his characters, he sparks the reader's understanding of himself and his world.
"God's in His heaven--all's right with the world!"

10.  Alfred, Lord Tennyson
Stunningly illustrated, this volume contains favorites such as The Eagle, The Charge of the Light Brigade, The Lady of Shalot, Flower in  the Crannied Wall, and twenty-six others.

11.  Samuel Taylor Coleridge
A good sampling of the variety of Coleridge's poems, including The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Kubla Khan, and Answer to a Child's Question.

12.  Walt Whitman
Experience the powerful and energetic poems of this beloved American poet, including O Captain! My Captain!, When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd, A Man's Body at Auction, and The Noiseless Patient Spider.

13.  William Wordsworth
Enjoy Wordsworth's finest poems in this volume, including I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud, My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold, The Solitary Reaper, and many more!

14.  William Shakespeare
"Gathered together in this enchanting collection are Shakespeare's most electrifying scenes, his most fascinating characters, and his most thrilling words."
-from book's dust jacket

15.  William Butler Yeats
Yeats, one of the finest modern poets in the English language, "brings to life the drama...and haunting beauty of his native Ireland in this selection of 26 of his most accessible and mesmerizing poems." -from book's back cover
