   The exciting story of how the members of the Little family, all 6 inches or shorter, survive amidst dangerous rodents, furry felines, and other dangerous creatures. 
*This is a great story with which to introduce young listeners to chapter books.

The Doll's House
   The story of four dolls and their two mistresses, Emily and Charlotte.  What happens to their happy little home when the haughty doll, Marchpane arrives?  This book was an instant hit.  After hearing this story read aloud, my daughter decided to read all of Rumer Godden's books on her own.

If I had to choose only one book from this list to read to my young daughter, this would be the book.  An enchanting compilation of stories about Raggedy Ann and her life with the other dolls and their little mistress, Marcella.

Twig
  
First published in 1942, this is the story of little Twig, who lives a very ordinary life in a little house.  One day she finds a discarded can with bright red tomatoes on the outside.  Turning it upside-down, she decides it would make a perfect fairy house.  The enjoyable story of Twig and her little fairy house.  Beautiful hardback edition, with thick pages.

Bambi
   The original story, written by Felix Salten.  I never realized this was a real book apart from the Disney movie until it was mentioned Karen Andreola's book, Pocket of Pinecones.  I read it to my girls this winter and it was definitely a favorite.  We used Salten's descriptions of forest life and animals to take our own virtual "nature walk," looking up the various mentioned plants and animals in our North American Wildlife book and tracing them into our notebook.  Great winter fun!

  My grandmother gave me a copy of this book when I was a little girl, and now my daughter enjoys it as I did.  The (somewhat true) account of Paul and Maureen and their efforts to capture the elusive Phantom's foal, Misty.

The Incredible Journey
  Two dogs and a cat set off together through the vast wilderness of Canada in an effort to return to their master.  This heartwarming, sometimes gripping story shows how the three learn to work together in order to survive.

Lad, a Dog
  I love dog stories and this was one of my favorites.  When I was in 5th grade, I got my own collie and named him "Lad" after this dog.  A wonderful story about a wonderful dog.

 

Gentle Ben
 
The Alaskan wilderness is a lonely place for Mark, until be befriends a huge bear whose vicious owner keeps him chained.  When the townspeople learn of the bear, they are determined to destroy him, and only Mark's parents, who come to realize how much the bear means to their son, can save him.
