The Littles The exciting story of how the members of the Little family, all 6 inches or shorter, survive amidst dangerous rodents, furry felines, and other dangerous creatures. *This is a great story with which to introduce young listeners to chapter books. pb 80pp	The Doll's House The story of four dolls and their two mistresses, Emily and Charlotte. What happens to their happy little home when the haughty doll, Marchpane arrives? This book was an instant hit. After hearing this story read aloud, my daughter decided to read all of Rumer Godden's books on her own.
The Raggedy Ann Stories- Johnny Gruelle If I had to choose only one book from this list to read to my young daughter, this would be the book. An enchanting compilation of stories about Raggedy Ann and her life with the other dolls and their little mistress, Marcella. hc	The Raggedy Andy Stories- Johnny Gruelle More darling stories about the happenings in the lives of Marcella's dolls. This time, focusing on Raggedy Andy. hc
James Herriot's Treasury for Children Warm and joyful tales by the author of All Creatures Great and Small. hc	Twig First published in 1942, this is the story of little Twig, who lives a very ordinary life in a little house. One day she finds a discarded can with bright red tomatoes on the outside. Turning it upside-down, she decides it would make a perfect fairy house. The enjoyable story of Twig and her little fairy house. Beautiful hardback edition, with thick pages. 152pp. hc

Bambi The original story, written by Felix Salten. I never realized this was a real book apart from the Disney movie until it was mentioned Karen Andreola's book, Pocket of Pinecones. I read it to my girls this winter and it was definitely a favorite. We used Salten's descriptions of forest life and animals to take our own virtual "nature walk," looking up the various mentioned plants and animals in our North American Wildlife book and tracing them into our notebook. Great winter fun! 191pp	The Jungle Book (Kipling) One of the most popular children's books ever written, there are subtle lessons in justice and loyalty in these imaginative tales. pb
Just So Stories (Kipling) A dozen imaginative fables by one of the world's great storytellers propose whimsical explanations of how certain animals acquired their distinctive physical characteristics: "How the Camel Got His Hum," "How the Whale Got His Throat," "How the Leopard Got His Spots," and several more. pb	A Bear Called Paddington Adults seem to enjoy this classic story of the bear who is adopted by the Brown family as much as the children do. Justin Morgan Had a Horse The story of the tiny runt colt, Little Bub, who was destined to sire a world-famous breed of American horses-- the Morgan. pb 176pp	Misty of Chincoteague My grandmother gave me a copy of this book when I was a little girl, and now my daughter enjoys it as I did. The (somewhat true) account of Paul and Maureen and their efforts to capture the elusive Phantom's foal, Misty. pb 173pp
The Incredible Journey Two dogs and a cat set off together through the vast wilderness of Canada in an effort to return to their master. This heartwarming, sometimes gripping story shows how the three learn to work together in order to survive. 148pp	Pinocchio The classic story of the naughty wooden puppet and his efforts to become a real boy. (If you've only seen the movie, be prepared for a much different character!)
Lassie Come-Home Joe's beloved collie, Lassie, must be sold because of the family's financial crisis. The exciting account of Lassie's journey back to her little master.	Lad, a Dog I love dog stories and this was one of my favorites. When I was in 5th grade, I got my own collie and named him "Lad" after this dog. A wonderful story about a wonderful dog.
Gentle Ben The Alaskan wilderness is a lonely place for Mark, until be befriends a huge bear whose vicious owner keeps him chained. When the townspeople learn of the bear, they are determined to destroy him, and only Mark's parents, who come to realize how much the bear means to their son, can save him. pb 191pp	Big Red The suspenseful story of an orphaned French-Canadian boy, his Irish setter, Big Red, and their life in the harsh Wintapi wilderness that they call home.
Old Yeller Old Yeller showed up on the farm as an ugly, thieving rascal. However, Travis was sure he would be a big help on the Texas farm. The story of Old Yeller and his new family. pb 181pp	Where the Red Fern Grows Billy and his dogs, Old Dan and Little Ann, were the finest hunting team in the valley. The story that has become a classic. pb 248pp
