The Five Chinese Brothers
The classic story of the five identical Chinese brothers who use their special talents to avoid an unjust punishment.  A favorite children's story.

Five Children and It by Edith Nesbit
One morning five brothers and sisters discover an ancient sand-fairy who will grant them one wish each day.  The children soon learn that it is very difficult to think of sensible wishes and always look forward to sunset, when the wish finally vanishes.

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle
You may remember this funny story from your own childhood.  Enjoy watching as Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle cures the neighborhood children of their bad habits.  An absolute riot!

pb    128pp

Pippi Longstocking
Enjoy a rollicking romp with Pippi and her neighbors, Annika and Tommy.  Whether Pippi is scrubbing her floors, doing arithmetic, or stirring things up at a fancy tea party, her flair for the outrageous always seems to lead to another adventure.

pb    160pp.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
As impoverished little Charlie Bucket opens the second candy bar, he is awestruck to find one of the five Golden Tickets to Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.  The wacky story of what happens to Charlie and the other four ticket holders while in the infamous factory.

pb    155pp

Peter Pan
Barrie's enchanting tale of Peter Pan, a boy who never grows up.  Illustrated.

pb

The Story of Dr. Dolittle- Hugh Lofting
Join in kindly Dr. Dolittle's adventure as he sails across the sea to save the monkeys.

The Enormous Egg
First printed in 1956, this is one of the most popular children's books of all time.  "When Nate Twitchell discovers that one of his family's hens has laid the biggest egg ever....neither he nor his parents, the townspeople, the scientists, or the politicians are prepared for what comes out!" From back cover

$5.99

The Pied Piper of Hamelin
This unabridged version of Browning's famous poem for children is dramatically and beautifully illustrated by Kate Greenaway.

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
This was my all-time favorite book, growing up.  The original, unabridged version of C.S. Lewis's fabulous story of four children who enter the wonderland of Narnia .

The Twenty-One Balloons
In this 1948 Newbery Award winner, Professor Sherman, during an attempt to fly his balloon across the Pacific Ocean, accidentally ends up on the island of Krakatoa, a land of paradise.  Unfortunately, since he has witnessed the secret wonders of this land, he is not permitted to leave....unless he can escape!

Linnets and Valerians

The Little White Horse
"The theme is as old as the fairy tales, and it is written with a haunting beauty of wording and atmosphere . . . A book to cherish, to read again and again and again." (The Saturday Review ) I thought this review worded my feelings exactly.  Written in 1946, this magical story about orphan Maria Merryweather is a charmer.

pb    238pp

The Water Babies
A classic since its first publication in 1863, The Water Babies is the story of Tom, a little chimney sweep, and his magical adventures beneath the waves.  This is an abridged version.

A Wrinkle in Time
This is another book I loved as a child (and still do).  Meg and Charles must travel through time via space wrinkles in order to save their father from grave danger.  Fantastic story!

pb    198pp

American Tall Tales
Stories of Davy Crockett, Johnny Appleseed, Pecos Bill, John Henry, Paul Bunyan, and others, told by a favorite author of mine,  Mary Pope Osborne.

Beowulf, A New Telling
The oldest epic in the English language retold for children-  I've looked at a lot of retellings, and this is the one I like the best for elementary aged students.

103pp

Eragon
The story of a poor farm boy who finds a dragon egg and the exciting adventures that ensue.  Knopf decided to publish this book when one of their editors related how his son actually read the whole book even though he hated to read.  This anti-reading son even exclaimed, "This book is better than Harry Potter!"  The two boys I tested it on (ages 11 and 13) said that it got off to a slow start, but that they loved it and planned to read the rest of the upcoming series.

This New York Times bestseller that was written by a homeschooler!

Animal Farm
The Lord of the Rings

The Sword in the Stone
This is my favorite "King Arthur" story!
