The Boxcar Children
As a child, my younger sister hated to read.  My mother tried enticing her with many different books, but it was this one that did the trick.  Children are fascinated by the resourcefulness and thoughtfulness of the four Alden children who live in a boxcar.  This book, as does each book in the series, has a small mystery to be solved. Simple vocabulary makes this book accessible to young listeners and young readers alike.

The Boxcar Children series:

The Mysteries of Sherlock Holmes (abridged)
What is the secret of the goose that swallowed a priceless blue gem?  How is a woman killed when she is alone in a locked room?  Why does a mysterious club let in only people with red hair?  Sherlock Holmes is the greatest detective in the world.  But he'll need all of his skill, not to mention the help of his good friend Dr. Watson, to solve these three cases!   95pp.

Encyclopedia Brown: Boy Detective
Who ever knew that the brains behind Idaville's police force is a 5th grade boy?  See if you can solve the case along with the young mastermind using the clues in the stories.  (The answers are in the back!)  I read the whole series as a child and look forward to reading them again with my girls.

The Mystery of the Stuttering Parrot
(The Three Investigators)

In searching for a lost parrot who recites Shakespeare with a stutter, Jupiter Jones' firm of young detectives becomes involved with a missing masterpiece.

(I loved The Three Investigators series when I was growing up- especially Jupiter Jones' magnificent brilliance.  I think it beats the Hardy Boys by a long way. This series has been brought back into print, but some volumes are already unavailable again.  Get them while you can! A note of interest:  Alfred Hitchcock edited this series!)

Other titles in the series:
The Mystery of the Talking Skull

The Secret of Skeleton Island
