Really Reading! Learning to read the Tanglewood Way
SOLD
OUT
For the most part, I've found that teaching children to read is not
very hard. (Many parents become frustrated simply because they try to
teach a child who is still too young.) There really is no need for
an expensive and fancy curriculum with all sorts of gadgets and papers.
Basically, a child needs to be able to recognize all of the letters in
the alphabet and know what their primary sounds are. It is a small
step from there to actual reading. Of course, phonetic study from
the beginning is essential, so that when the child encounters certain
letter combinations he will know how to decode them.
I have successfully used this program
with several children, most of whom could read easy books by the 3rd
lesson. All have moved very quickly to the fluent reader level,
all the while enjoying their new found skill.
Twenty-one short lessons focusing on
phonetics are included in this program, most of which can be done in
about ten minutes apiece.

Grouped Readers Reading
Program A:
This group of readers is intended for use with beginning readers.
They are listed in order of difficulty and coincide somewhat with the
studies in Really Reading!
These books may be bought separately or as a grouping.

Reading Program B:
These readers are for those
children who already understand how to read, but need more practice
in order to become fluent readers.
The books chosen to be readers for this stage are
some old familiar favorites from my childhood. I tried to pick books
that were fun, colorful, and enticing enough to make a child want to read
them, even if the child finds them a little difficult at first. Most
of these books are on the same reading level and may be read in any order.
These books may be bought separately or as a grouping.

Reading Program C:
These readers are for those
children who are very comfortable with reading. They are appropriate
for all elementary grades. I have tried to choose books that are fun,
enjoyable, and useful in the development of virtues. It is suggested
that you look through the list and pick those books you think will
interest your child.

Phonics Workbooks Spectrum
Phonics
These phonics workbooks have been around for years as Merrill
Phonics Skilltexts. Now, with a new name and a new color look,
they are actually cheaper! I couldn't do without these workbooks.
As much as I like natural learning (no workbooks), I depend on these for
order and thoroughness. Each page is one short lesson, and each
lesson briefly explains a phonetic rule and then has a straightforward
activity illustrating the rule. (Dictionary and
study/comprehension skills are briefly covered too.) In my
opinion, a necessity!
*I've found that the grade levels are on
the easy side. I suggest using a grade 2 book with a first grader,
and so on.
